Donkey Kong in general Donkey Kong in generalDonkey Kong in general Donkey Kong in general

Donkey Kong (or DK for short), is the carefree and lazy, yet trustworthy hero of Donkey Kong Island, as well as the main character of the Donkey Kong series.
Though known as Donkey Kong, he is actually a descendant of the original Donkey Kong, and successor after the latter retired after his numerous defeats at hands of Mario.

The games originally described DK as Cranky's grandson. 64 changed this to being his son, and then it has switched back and forth, making their specific relationship uncertain.

The character Donkey Kong first appeared in the game of the same name, where he acted as the main antagonist; however, sometime after his defeat, he retired (as mentioned above) and eventually let his age get to him and took on the name Cranky Kong.

His son Donkey Kong Jr. may have become the current Donkey Kong thus inheriting his father's name, lineage and responsibilities. However this conflicts with DK being described as his grandson, as people were initially led to believe that DK may have been the son of DK Junior, or nephew, if Cranky had more than one child.

The current Donkey Kong, designed by Rare, is a carefree simian who spends his days collecting Bananas and spending time with his friends and family, particularly his nephew and best friend, Diddy Kong. Donkey Kong is very protective of his island and his Banana Hoard, and because of this, he is always ready to protect them from those who would attempt to steal or do harm to either. The autentic Donkey Kong's character design was created by Shigeru Miyamoto for the Donkey Kong arcade game.

He is currently voiced by Takashi Nagasako in most of the games as of 2004.

Diddy Kong is Donkey Kong's best friend who has gone on countless adventures with him. In the manual of Donkey Kong Country, he is described as Donkey Kong's "wannabe nephew" and a chimpanzee (despite the fact that he looks like a monkey). He is a creation of the British company, Rareware; however, he has a Nintendo logo on his red hat. This is probably to signify the actual publisher of the DK series. Diddy has also gone on many adventures by himself and has even starred in his own racing game for the Nintendo 64 and Nintendo DS.

King K. Rool, who has gone by many different aliases throughout his career, is the main antagonist of the Donkey Kong series. He is the malevolent and insane ruler of the Kremling race and the head of the Kremling Krew. King K. Rool has repeatedly tried to steal Donkey Kong's Banana Hoard for reasons that are not fully understood. To reach his goal, he has even gone as far as kidnapping members of the Kong Family on various occasions just to get his way. He is voiced by Toshihide Tsuchiya.

Candy Kong is a character of the Donkey Kong series, created by Rare and owned by Nintendo. She is Donkey Kong's girlfriend and she has been a minor ally numerous times in his adventures.
She was the first female character throughout the Donkey Kong series, although Dixie Kong was the first playable female character who first appeared in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. She appears to be very tall, much taller than Donkey Kong.

Funky Kong is a recurring Kong character of the Donkey Kong series. Funky Kong often serves as an ally to the Kong Family, offering services such as transportation and weaponry. Funky Kong has also recently been appearing in most DK spin-offs and even Mario spin-offs. Funky Kong is voiced by Toshihide Tsuchiya.
Funky Kong makes his debut in the original Donkey Kong Country. Funky serves as the owner of Funky's Flights, which is available in every area of Donkey Kong Island. He will allow Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong to use his Jumbo Barrel to travel to areas of the island the player has beaten. In Donkey Kong Country''s two remakes, Funky also hosts Funky's Fishing, which is a combo-based fishing minigame.

Cranky Kong is Donkey Kong's constantly complaining and rambling grandfather, who has made numerous appearances throughout the Donkey Kong series. He usually acts as a guide in the games to help his son Donkey Kong or his friends along their journey as he has had some enlightening experiences. In some appearances, he is indicated to be the original Donkey Kong from the arcade game, Donkey Kong and Mario's main adversary in the game prior to his retirement. Because of his claims to be the original Donkey Kong, he often looks down on his son and breaks the fourth wall by saying that Donkey Kong will never be as great a character as he was during his prime.
According to the Donkey Kong Country series, Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong from the arcade games. During his youthful prime, Cranky Kong kidnapped Pauline, was kidnapped by Mario and even battled Stanley the Bugman in a greenhouse.

Dixie Kong is a character from the Donkey Kong series. She is Diddy Kong's girlfriend and Tiny Kong’s younger sister. She also has two cousins, Chunky Kong and Kiddy Kong. Her first appearance was as a sidekick in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Aside from games, Dixie also appeared in the Donkey Kong Country cartoon and in two comics, as well.

Dixie was the first female Kong to be playable, although Candy Kong was the first female Kong to appear in the series. She was also the first female character in the Mario series to star in her own game; she starred in two games even before Princess Peach got her own game. Dixie has appeared in seventeen games and is playable in fifteen of them.
